That is the question the Taliban asked when they stormed the 15 year old Malala’s school bus on October 9th 2012.

They shot her in the head in an attempt to silence her and end her campaign for girls’ rights to go to school.

Think about that for a second, please. This young girl was shot through the head for daring to go to school. For daring to have a future.

Not only did she survive, but she came back a fighter. She became a voice for girls all around the world who are denied an education - the most sure way to a safe and viable future.

I love education. I strongly believe that I am where I am today because my parents fought for me to go to good schools even when we didn't have money for much else. It's something that I never took for granted, and it's something I strongly support.

This is why I support Malala. Because more than charity, an education is the strongest way to lift a child from poverty, from enslavement. Because if you don't know that you can succeed, how could you even know to try.  This is why as a director I fight for representation of women on screen. So that young girls can know they can succeed.

Her shooting, and her refusal to stand down from what she believed was right, brought to light the plight of millions of children around the world who are denied an education today.

There are 600 million adolescent girls in the developing world. They are an undeniable force for social and economic impact. But only if given the opportunity.

Around the world, girls are denied a formal education because of social, economic, legal and political factors. And in being denied an education, society loses one of its greatest and most powerful resources.

The Malala Fund aims to change that.

Education empowers girls to raise their voices, to unlock their potential, and to demand change.

The Malala Fund’s solutions are grounded in inspired innovation: they are girl-centric approaches to education that support the Fund’s goal of creating a world where every girl reaches her true potential.

The Malala Fund is committed to investing in the most innovative and effective projects around the world. They work with local partners as they believe that solutions must come from within the communities where change needs to happen. They scrutinize every investment and track its progress and impact.
